A new File Navigator release is very close

Do you know "File Navigator"?

It's a nice and small plug-in which mimics a file exploring system in your Lotus Notes sidebar. You can find the plug-in at OpenNTF. If you haven't seen it before, here are some screenshots.

During the last weeks we received a lot of feature requests - and most of them are considered for the new release! As a small sneak preview I can name a few:
  • EML conversion of mail documents
  • mapping of UNC paths
  • automatic refresh of drive list (for removable media)
  • enhanced context menu with more keyboard short-cuts
  • supporting more native languages, i. e. czech

It's running very, very smooth at the moment. I'm just finishing some minor tweaks and ui enhancements. After that some final testing had to be done. Hopefully I'll be able to release it till the end of this week.

Mapping of UNC paths was about to ask for. Rene, thank you for this tool and your contribution to the community. Much appreciated.

I tested this tool on R8.0.2 but it did not work.

I've been using File Navigator since the first release. It's a great plugin for the Notes Client. Can't wait for the next release.

@Mike: File Navigator is designed for Notes 8.5.x - you can see it at the project description on OpenNTF.

I know that my question sounds a bit nasty but I would really like to know. What is the advantage of a File Navigator plug-in while a native File Explorer is just a shortcut away?

@Heinz:
Well, Heinz, I wouldn't say that it sounds nasty - it is a good question.
For my opinion it is the same like for all those other sidebar apps: you have not to leave your favourite working client - Lotus Notes.
In our company we are using a bunch of small and self-written apps in the sidebar. Starting from a simple calculator up to our own phone/TAPI solution. You know, everything is embedded and just one sidebar click away... ;-)

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I will be following this concept with interest. From a developers perspective this is an interesting project and it seems that Notes users like it too.

You're always welcome. And you pointed it out - 'Notes users like it too'. That's why I invest my free time in this project.

Will the EML-Conversion be part of the new release? In which direction will the Conversion work?The export of mails as EML is an old feature request for the Notes client. Cool that you put it into File Navigator. Great.I had already installed File Navigator and I like the sidebar integration.

Further to the comment "Notes users like it too", can I just add my endorsement. Prior to the availability of the Notes File Navigator, I almost never used drag and drop. It was always too hard/slow/awkward to get from source to destination. But with the File Navigator, drag and drop is now the quickest and easiest way to save or attach files to emails. Well done! Drag and drop is finally useful for me.

@Detlev:
Yes, the conversion will be part of the next release. It's an export conversion. Via a preference you can decide if you want to create URL link files or EML files from a dropped mail.
And I integrated my own EML viewer - for those who don't have Quickr. ;-)
